For Release on Monday, May 3, 2010

Off the success of last year’s program, the City of Dunkirk’s Department of Planning and Development has announced the release of its 2010 Housing Rehabilitation Program.  The goals of this program are to help income eligible homeowners improve their homes and neighborhoods.

This program, the City of Dunkirk Housing Rehabilitation Program is structured to improve the housing of income eligible persons in a manner that conserves existing housing stock and contributes to neighborhood revitalization and preservation.  Grants are available for up to 100 percent of eligible rehabilitation expenses, not to exceed $5,000 for standard repairs and $7,500 for roof replacements.  Amounts in excess of these figures will generally not be considered.

“One of our challenges this year is the lack of funding” said Kory Ahlstrom, Director of Planning and Development.  “Last year, we spent over $200,000 on 38 houses.  This year we will have less than half of that to spend”.

Those who applied and received grants last year are ineligible for this year’s program.  Those who applied last year, and did not receive funding must reapply this year.  However, you will still be rewarded points for being on the waiting list.

Applications are available at the Department of Development office, 338 Central Ave., Second Floor Sterns Building, or visit www.cityofdunkirk.com and clink on the development link.  Applications for the 2010 program are due June 11 at 12pm.

This program is funded by the City of Dunkirk Community Development Block Grant in cooperation with the U.S. Housing and Urban Development.
